What is an EICR?
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a detailed inspection and test of a property’s fixed wiring, sockets, switches, consumer unit and protective devices. It records defects and safety concerns.
How often should an EICR be carried out?
Usually every 10 years for an owner-occupied home and every 5 years for rented homes or businesses, unless the previous report recommends sooner. An inspection is also sensible when buying, selling or preparing a property to let.
How often should a consumer unit be replaced?
There is no fixed replacement interval. Replacement may be advised if the unit is damaged, overheating, has faulty or obsolete equipment, lacks suitable RCD protection, or an EICR identifies necessary safety improvements.
Why does my consumer unit or RCD keep tripping?
Repeated tripping usually points to an overload, a faulty appliance or an electrical fault. Do not keep resetting it. Call an electrician if it recurs, will not reset, or you notice heat, sparks or a burning smell.
